About Azhari

Luxury, romance and complete privacy has been a key feature in the design and layout of this unique Beach Suite. Beautifully positioned to enjoy stunning sea views, not only from the living area, but also from the spacious bedroom fitted with fully retractable glass doors, revealing the extraordinary panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. The custom build Emperor size bed with luxurious bedlinen, a spacious en-suite indoor bathroom and an incredible private outdoor Jungle shower with hot water, completes this tropical beach setting. The comfortable dining and living space is complimented by a deep blue infinity plunge pool (4x2x2m), inviting for a cool and luxury dip, after a relaxing beach walk. A giant fossilized clam sink feature (Tridacna Gigantea, approx. more than 280,000 years old), adds to the unique interior design and décor of the suite. Play some sounds with the wireless Bluetooth speaker provided or simply listen to the calming sounds of the Indian Ocean.

The beach lounge area, right in front of the suite, provides additional space for private sunbathing & relaxation. A hammock, deck chairs, sunbeds and a beach shower, crafted from a section of the Azhari Dhow, are set up just for you. From there a timber stepped foot path leads to the gateway of an additional shared seafront beach lounge, with a fire-pit, large timber deck, sunbeds, hammock, dhow bench and the amazing Inshallah beach swing. To round off your private experience, a small kitchen compliments your very own well- stocked ‘self service’ bar, as well as offering a selection of coffee, tea and biscuits, to enjoy at any time of the day or night. Personalised menus cater for all dietary preferences and are freshly prepared and served by our highly experienced chef and service team.

History

The Azhari Beach Suite was named after a large Indian Ocean trading dhow which was constructed in the early 1930s from Himalayan teak wood. In May 2015, during a storm, M.V. Azhari lost power and ran aground on the reef of Diani Beach, almost directly opposite of our property Inshallah. No one died, but all trading goods and the dhow were lost as she broke into pieces being battered over the reef by in and outgoing tides. With considerable time and effort, the old ship, with its beautiful, reclaimed timber beams, were then transformed and crafted into a rich & opulent living space, complimented by unique interior providing the very genetics of the properties authentic and luxurious character.

An antique Swahili carved door provides the frame for the central coffee table which displays some of the ship’s original steel bolts and ship’s nails recovered from the dhow’s timber beams. The suite is modern and well designed, yet steeped in history, and fits perfectly with its gorgeous, natural environment. The sandbank on which the M.V. Azhari ran aground is clearly visible on a low tide north of the suite. There are still some remnants of the wreck close to the sandbank and the reef, which makes for an interesting snorkelling trip on a low tide.

The Dhows’ maximum carrying capacity was 450 tonnes. M.V. Azhari spend many years trading between the ports of Asia, Qatar, Iran, Dubai, Somalia, Bahrain & Djibouti for most of the 1970’s until her unfortunate demise in 2015. This large trading Dhow used to carry bulk amounts of rice, sugar, cooking oil, cement and other trading goods and mostly supplied East African ports using the Indian Ocean seasonal trade winds.

Giant Fossil Clams

Incredible giant fossil clams have been repurposed for the bathroom and outdoor water feature. These clams have been reclaimed from inland coastal quarries, NOT from the ocean. They are (were) the world’s biggest clam species to exist. The Tridacna Gigantea became extinct during the later Pleistocene period around 180,000 years ago due to a natural disaster that saw sea levels rise worldwide by 20 meters within a week. They can be found deeply embedded in ancient limestone quarries by using GPR technology. The largest clam of this species ever found weighed a staggering 530 kilos. Baroque blister pearls inside these ancient relics are the rarest pearls in the world and only 5 have been found to today. Tridacna Gigantea can only be found along the Indian Ocean coastline of East Africa. Tanzania, Zanzibar and Pemba included. For more information check https://venuscollection.co.uk

Outdoor Luxury

Tropical Jungle Shower

There is something amazing about being outside with nature while having a shower, a transition point between outside and in. Lush green tropical plants, teak decked platform and cascades of  water which seemingly flows out of a giant mahogany tree.  Clean off and reset.

Relax & Recharge

Palm Tree Hammock

Feel the warm sea breeze gently sway you in our palm tree hammock, while Dhows sail past on the Indian Ocean. Read a book, listen to music or meditate to the sounds of the East African coastline.

Peace and Tranquility

Beach Front Luxury
